Statistical Skills
Why is experimental design important?
-Good design maximises the amount of information we can obtain about a hypothesis
-Poorly designed studies may lead to :-
---Wasted effort, money and animals
---Lack of interesting results
Design process – think ahead to reporting
Study aim
---Eg Show males are taller than females
Reporting at end of study
1. Statistical significance
---Males are statistically significantly taller than females
2. Generalisation
---Result may be generalised to other populations
3. Biases
---that could invalidate result
