Pilot and proof of concept studies
-Experimental design is suitable for confirmatory studies
---to prove a hypothesis or answer a specific question

-Pilot studies may sometimes be appropriate :-
---Gain familiarity with experimental procedures
---Opportunity to refine approach
---Test logistics of proposed larger/full study
---Provide training for staff and researchers
---Ensure treatments are not unsafe
---Obtain initial estimate of variability

-Should still try to justify proposed sample size to achieve objective
