Beyond the Books is a podcast from the University of Edinburgh’s School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at research and the people who make it happen. This episode is the last in Series 2 and the final one to be hosted by Emma Aviet, a PhD student of English Literature.
In this episode, Emma interviews Dr Emanuela Patti, a Lecturer in Italian in the Department of European Languages and Cultures. They chat about Emanuela's fascinating career and journey to her current position at the University of Edinburgh, and her research which lies at the intersection of literary, media, and cultural studies. In particular, they discuss the late Pier Paolo Pasolini who was an Italian poet, filmmaker, writer, and intellectual, exploring the themes and images in his stories and films that reflect on the way they pull from the past, including from the work of Dante Alighieri. Finally, they touch on the idea of electronic literature, spanning from its very beginning in the 1960s to the blogs and fan fiction of today. Emanuela has fascinating ideas on collaboration and appropriation in these art forms, so make sure to listen.
