During May 2022, ICMS hosted the Research Workshop - Adaptive Moving and Anisotropic Meshes for the Numerical Approximation of PDEs. This public lecture was part of the workshop.
Computers dominate our lives, and we have seen an explosive growth of
computer technology since the 1960s. However, computers have been
around for a long time. In this talk Chris starts by looking at the
history of computing devices, from slide rules and Babbage to their use
in code breaking in WW2. He then looks at all aspects of modern
computing from communication and the Internet, to the simulation of
physical processes as varied as the evolution of the universe to
predicting the weather. Finally he looks at where computing is heading, from the huge and
recent increase in the use of machine learning and artificial
intelligence, to the future possibilities of quantum computing.
