The School of Scottish Studies established a short programme of film fieldwork during the 1970s and this included setting up and filming a reconstruction of waulking in South Uist. Waulking was done to shrink and finish the handwoven tweed. The wet cloth was kneaded and passed from hand to hand round a group of women seated at a board, often a door that had been removed for the purpose.
The waulking was accompanied by songs, local and more widely known, on a variety of topics. The verses were sung by an individual with the chorus of vocables sung by the whole group. This waulking took place in Hogh Beag and included Kate Macdonald, Kate Macdonald, Isabel Maclellan, Mary A Macintyre, Mary B Campbell, Joan Macdonald, Margaret Lamont, Nellie Macdonald, Catherine Maclean and Dolina Macrury.
