From the Digital Skills Festival: 27th May 2021.
Come and practice your computer programming skills in a fun, relaxed environment.
This workshop will use the Python programming language. There will be a browser-based programming environment available, so you don’t need to install anything on your computer.
How a Code Dojo works:
- Come along whatever your ability level, from complete beginner to expert.
- We’ll work on a “toy problem”, a small self-contained task that we can make progress on (or even solve) in a couple of hours.
- Good Code Dojo tasks are ones that anybody can relate to. Some examples from past dojos include: a poetry generator, a virtual pet, and converting to and from Roman numbers.
- If you want, bring a task to work on – but not your homework, please. (If you don’t bring one please don’t worry, just bring yourself!)
- We’ll vote on which task to work on, then divide into teams. Each team will have a mix of beginners and experienced programmers.
- The teams will work to solve the problem for a couple of hours, then ….
- … we’ll come together and talk about each team’s solution. Even partial solutions are interesting (sometimes even more than the complete ones).
The dojo will be run by Alisdair Tullo, a computer programmer in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences.
