Prof Michael Rovatsos discusses the challenging ethical issues associated with distributing benefit using algorithms. One way of looking at this is to consider the different criteria that can be applied to compute allocations of benefit among different people when we have limited resources to allocate, and they may have different preferences over them. These resources could be houses, loans, advertisement space, the ranking position on a hotel recommendation page, or some content presented to a social media user.
