Dr Colin Brady: Dealer’s Choice: How Japanese art dealers transformed the
Asian art market in America
In the late 19th and early 20th
century the introduction of Japanese art dealers to the American art market
shifted the purchasing habits of Asian art by private buyers and public
institutions. While Asian countries reached out to the world through World’s
Fairs and international exhibitions, enhancing their standing among their
global peers, Japanese art dealers began selling and educating the broader
public on the less familiar arts of Asia. The materials, books and exhibitions
they would produce often preceded the production of similar literature by their
American counterparts. This talk will explore the effectiveness these dealers
had in transmitting Asian art and culture while simultaneously profiting from
their exploits.
