The MESH project - Mapping Edinburgh's Social History - superimposes historical data on geo-referenced historical maps. The video explores how surveying almost 100,000 buildings, assigning accurate street numbers and tagging property types allied with historical maps and other data has produced an exceptionally accurate and comprehensive map in Edinburgh. The methodology is explained in the video, and some examples show how this aids historical analysis. An important point is that the licensing and copyright needs only to acknowledge the 'OpenStreetMap community' and therefore avoids the restrictions and limitations imposed by Google, Ordinance Survey and other providers. MESH provides a 'best practice' exemplar for other towns and cities.
