We will look at selective breeding, demonstrating how it can improve a population, and predicting a possible response to selection. The essence in selective breeding is to identify genetically best individuals as parents of the next generation. When doing this, we must remember that phenotypes of individuals are a function of their genotypes and the environment where they live. This concept is also the essence of the breeder’s equation, which we will use for predicting response to selection.
