As digital technologies and practices become more deeply woven into the fabric of our everyday and educational surroundings, there is a need to continually revisit traditional assumptions around how and where learning happens. We invite you to join us in responding to this challenge, as we gather for an event that will explore the notion of a ‘postdigital classroom’. Through a series of lightning presentations, we will examine the presence and influence of digital resources within a range of learning spaces. You will be encouraged to respond to these presentations, for instance by sharing insights from your own areas of study, practice or research.

Jack Reed will explore postdigital considerations for learning beyond the classroom as he lays out a case for a "postdigital outdoor education". Looking towards the experiences of children from traditionally nomadic Gypsy/Traveller communities, Maureen Finn will question how the postdigital era is experienced in Scottish primary schools, including what happens when children are given the power to create their own learning spaces. David Overend will draw on an assemblage of images, recordings, notes and impressions generated from fieldwork as he responds to the contemporary city as a postdigital learning space. In the setting of the undergraduate architecture studio, James Lamb will describe the coalescing of digital with more traditional resources, practices and spaces. These presentations will be supported by an overview of postdigital thinking by Petar Jandrić, including its recent emergence as a popular and productive way of exploring the relationship between learning spaces and digital technologies.

Biographies

Professor Petar Jandrić is Professor of Informatics at Zagreb University of Applied Sciences. His research includes work at the intersections between critical pedagogy and information and communication technologies. Dr David Overend is a Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Studies at Moray House School of Education and Sport at the University of Edinburgh. He is Deputy Director of the MA(Hons) Interdisciplinary Futures at Edinburgh Futures Institute. Email: david.overend@ed.ac.uk

Dr Jack Reed’s research focuses on the entanglements between outdoor spaces and places, people's relationships with nature, and online networked environments.
