This is a conversation with Assistant Professor Ana María León, in which we discuss the research methods that have informed her recent book, Modernity for the Masses: Antonio Bonet's Dreams for Buenos Aires, published by University of Texas Press, as well as her approaches to academic collaborations and activism. The conversation was recorded on the 18th of January 2021.
ANA MARÍA LEÓN is an historian of architecture and an architect as well as an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. Her work scrutinizes how spatial practices and discourses of power and resistance produce modernities in the Americas, themes explored in Modernity for the Masses. Professor León contributes as an active member to several collaborations labouring to broaden the reach of architectural history. We were keen to speak to her due to the intersecting roles activism, pedagogy and formalism play in her work.
