From Moa Carlsson
This is a conversation with Professor Iain Jackson, in which we discuss his current research on architecture in 19th and 20th century Ghana, and the importance of collaboration in his work. The conversation was recorded on 7th January 2021.
IAIN JACKSON is an architect and historian. He is Professor of Architecture and Research Director at the Liverpool School of Architecture, where he also leads the Transnational Architecture Group. Working on "Tropical Architecture" and British architects abroad, his research concerns the history of architecture in colonial and postcolonial nations, especially in India and West Africa. A few of his recent books include Sharing Stories from Jamestown: The Creation of Mercantile Accra (TAG Press 2019), The Architecture of Edwin Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew Twentieth Century Architecture, Pioneer Modernism and the Tropics, authored together with Jessica Holland (Routledge 2016), and The Architecture School Survival Guide (2015). Currently, Jackson is researching the architecture of Ghana from 1880-1960, with a particular focus on the cities of Accra, Takoradi-Sekondi and Kumasi. We invited him to this conversation to learn more about the creative and collaborative ways in which he researches the development of transnational architecture.
