We’ve made a Jurassic discovery and…..it’s big!
It's a new species of Pterosaur (often known as a 'pterodactyl'). It lived around 170 million years ago and had a wingspan of more than 2.5 metres - making it the largest of its kind ever discovered from the Jurassic period.
PhD student Amelia Penny found this fascinating fossil on our Skye field trip, led by Professor Steve Brusatte.
After extensive study by our students and academics (including PhD student Natalia Jagielska and Professor Steve Brusatte), this spectacular fossil will now be added to the National Museums Scotland’s collection.
Want to study fossils and dinosaurs with us? We are one of the leading centres of palaeontology and geobiology research in the UK and globally. Our MScR degree is the only such programme in palaeontology and geobiology in the UK.
