This video offers a virtual Learning Technology induction for new members of staff in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences.
If you ever have any questions about Learning
Technology, you can contact the PPLS Learning Technologist, Aran Ward Sell (aran.ward.sell@ed.ac.uk). We are here to support you.
- You can find lots of information and resources on our website: http://learningtechnology.ppls.ed.ac.uk/
- Including the Guide to Online Teaching: https://learningtechnology.ppls.ed.ac.uk/section/online-teaching/
- And you can direct students to the student tech handbook: http://learningtechnology.ppls.ed.ac.uk/tech-handbook/
Here are some of the tools that are central to teaching in the school, with links attached.
- Learn is
the university's central Virtual Learning Environment. Pretty much all
teaching goes through Learn in one way or another. It's where academics
can post course materials and online activities for students, and where
assessment is carried out.
- Media Hopper Create (MHC) is
where videos (and other types of media, but mostly videos) are saved.
When you put a video (say a lecture, a workshop or the recording of an
event) on Media Hopper, you can then embed it in Learn or elsewhere.
- Here is a playlist, on MHC, about MHC. This is a good place to start: https://media.ed.ac.uk/category/How+To+Use+Media+Hopper+Create/43914641
- Here
is a recent training session by Bill on recording for Media Hopper
using Kaltura, and also some information about alternatives such as
recording through PowerPoint: https://media.ed.ac.uk/media/1_vt6ktyot
- And here are the university Information Services pages on Kaltura/MHC: https://www.ed.ac.uk/information-services/learning-technology/media-hopper-create/help-and-support/guides-and-support-documentation/media-hopper-portal
- Blackboard Collaborate
- This is where online live seminars are conducted. You can access Collaborate through any Learn course (usually under 'Course Activities'), or through MyEd.
- To access it through MyEd, go to www.myed.ed.ac.uk , log in, click 'Teaching and Research' and then click 'Collaborate Virtual Classroom'
- Feel free to set up a test session so that you can try it out!
- And here is a recording of a training session which we recently ran for tutors in the School of PPLS. This is a good demonstration of the Collaborate interface when there are multiple participants: https://media.ed.ac.uk/media/t/1_vb1iwj0i
- Microsoft Teams
- Although Collaborate is the recommended live teaching tool, we are aware that some academics use Teams for some of their live teaching sessions. Joanne Connolly, one of the CAHSS Learning Technologists, has put together a helpful guide to using Microsoft Teams for teaching:
Troubleshooting:
If you ever have problems with
Learn, Collaborate, MHC or other technology, please let us know! The
sooner we know about a problem the quicker we can try to fix it.
- You can also find information about contingency plans here: https://learningtechnology.ppls.ed.ac.uk/section/online-teaching/facilitating-live-seminars/contingency-options-live-online-seminars/
Hardware:
Please
raise an IS helpdesk call by emailing is.helpdesk@ed.ac.uk if you do
not have all of the hardware which you require for your work. It's also
worth flagging up that we have recently taken delivery of a very limited
number of 'home studio kits' that staff can borrow for making advanced
recordings from home.
- You can find more information on the Home Studio kits here: https://learningtechnology.ppls.ed.ac.uk/homestudio/#/
