Top-opening carriers are highly preferred for rabbits for ease of removing the animal. Be aware that the rabbit may attempt to jump out of the carrier once opened. Place a hand over the back of the rabbit to prevent this. A few reassuring strokes can be given. Slide one hand under the thorax with your index finger inbetween the forelimbs and ensure you have a firm grip of the legs, keeping them together. Your other hand lifts the rump of the rabbit supporting the rest of the body weight. Only lift up when you are certain the rabbit is controlled and not going to jump out of your grasp. Lift calmly and confidently and hold them in to your body whilst you travel to the consult trolley which should be located as near to the carrier as possible. When putting down on a surface, always ensure the back-end is placed down first. Position them on the table so that their rump is towards you but not too close to the edge of the table. A nervous rabbit will reverse so always make sure your body is up against the table and the front of your body is the back-stop for the rabbit. Keep two hands on the rabbit at all times.
